Fun filled weekend; photo filled blog

Hello Everyone, I’m a little delayed this week, but still better late than never, 3 weeks in a row now, I’m so proud of myself J
This weekend I had 3 wedding showers to make cupcakes for, one smash cake for an adorable one year old, and a wedding cake for my good friend.

First wedding shower was an assorted array of cupcakes, I forgot to take a quick snap shot before delivering them, but I ensure you they were pretty ;) I do however have a photo of the cake balls I sent along with the order.

Saturday morning I was off to Maple Ridge Park to meet up with Courtney from Eau Naturelle Photography, for a smash cake session with little cutie Colton. Colton’s mom (Lindsay), Courtney and I all went to high school together, funny how life comes full circle like that 10 years after high school. It looks like he enjoyed the cake! Photos courtesy of Eau Naturelle Photography of course.

A good friend of mine Christina was planning a wedding shower for her friend and asked me to make some cupcakes, their theme was “green apples” so I made little green apples with chocolate chips as the stems for the big cupcakes and little apple blossoms for the mini cupcakes.

Next I was on to a Las Vegas themed wedding shower; I made red, blue, green and yellow poker chips for the top of each cupcake; 140 to be exact!

And lastly on to my friend Shelby’s wedding cake! Four tiers, beautiful white roses, pewter coloured ribbon and a gorgeous brooch. I was so lucky to not only be a part of their special day by making the cake, but I also had the pleasure of attending the wedding. The entire wedding was on her parents’ property and the décor was amazing. Shelby you looked beautiful and I hope you and your guests enjoyed the cake!

Don’t forget the Grand Giveaway over at Little Lady Tutus is still going on until July 31st; be sure to check it out for your chance to win some great prizes!!

Until next week; this is how I blog.....

Don't forget, I love Blog comments :)

You either laugh or cry, and we don’t cry here!

Ever since I posted my first blog post last week, i’ve been looking forward to the second one, especially because I knew I had a busy weekend coming up with 3 wedding cakes to make, and I knew sharing them with you all would be so much fun. I can post the pictures on my facebook page and tweet them, but all you see is the finished product, and although I don’t have pictures of the process it takes to get to that finished product, mainly because my hands are sticky and covered in sugar most of the time, this blog gives me the chance to give you some insight into how my week goes when I have 3 wedding cakes to make!

This past week, because all three orders were for Saturday, I did my planning on Monday. I make a to-do list with what size cakes I need to make, what flavours, and how much cups of batter is required for each pan. Then I add up the amount of cups I need so I can figure out how many batches of each cake flavour I need to make. Then on Wednesday it’s off to bake! If you know me, you know i’m a HUGE list writer, I have a notepad on my computer and on my iPhone, but when it comes to writing lists I always go for the good ole pen and paper, perhaps this shows my age, LOL

All was going as planned until all the cakes were made and my mom and I were discussing what type of icing was going to go on each cake, I looked over my email with the details and 4 of the cakes we had made (Which makes two tiers) were the wrong flavour. I had jotted down the wrong flavours when writing my to-do list. Well my stomach did a flip, how could I be so dumb?!?! But my mom in her typical, don’t sweat it attitude said, don’t worry about it, we’ll bake new ones. Did I mention my mom rocks and is the best helper any girl could have! So I moped around for a bit, totally annoyed with myself that I had screwed up and my mom said, “stop moping around, you either laugh or cry in these situations, and there will be no crying here, so you better start laughing” (for those of you who know my mom, you can probably hear her saying this). So we had a laugh, and called it a night.

The next step was icing all of the cakes and cupcakes for all three orders, then covering them in fondant and decorating them. Thursday night I was up until 1am making 90 fondant gerber daisies, and Friday my mom and I were up until 2am rolling fondant and decorating. I think around midnight we started to lose it, we would burst into random fits of laughter and around 1am I got the hiccups that would just not go away.

Saturday morning I was up early to start the deliveries. Cake #1 was going to Vandusen Garden’s in Vancouver. Then it was off to Westwood Plateau for the delivery of cake/cupcakes #2. After that I went and loaded cake #3 into my car and was off to Langley. All day I drove around in the rain and felt so bad for my three brides, but I hear rain on your wedding day is good luck, so to all of them I hope you had a wonderful day. When you’re surrounded by friends and family i’m betting the weather doesn’t real mean much in the grand scheme of things.

I was really happy with how all three cakes turned out.  Check them out and decide for yourself!

Top and bottom tiers were Chocolate cake with Raspberry buttercream and the middle tier was butterscotch chip with vanilla frosting

The top cake was Chocolate with Strawberry Buttercream. Cupcakes were 3 different flavours – Chocolate with Peppermint Buttercream, Marble with Mocha Buttercream and the third kind was strawberry with Lemon Cream Cheese Frosting

This cake was really out of my element, but I hope I captured what the bride and groom had in mind. This cake consisted of 4 different flavours; the bottom tier was Vanilla Chocolate chip cake with Cream Cheese Frosting, the second tier was Lemon cake with Lemon Cream Cheese Frosting, the next tier was Vanilla cake with Caramel Buttercream, and lastly the top was Chocolate cake with Chocolate Frosting! If you’re looking for a how to tutorial on topsy turvy cakes, look no further than here posted by janellscakes; I did a lot of research last year and found this video to be the most helpful.

Until next week, I leave you with the link to a great giveaway happening at Little Lady Tutus blog; a chance to win a dozen cake pops and 7 other great prizes.

FIRST post - Taking the Leap

So I’ve decided enough is enough it’s time to start my blog! In January I picked a blog address and had my friend Alicia create banner for me, and then I stalled. I’m a huge procrastinator and that in combination with my insecurity about my writing skills; I made up excuses for the last 6 months about being too busy.  Today I’ve decided there is still time to blog, might not be all the time, but, I just have to take that leap and post my first entry.

So for those who don’t know me, my name is Heidi and I live in the outskirts of Vancouver, Canada. I am the baker and decorator behind Cakelicious Cakes Company and also work full time at an IT Recruitment firm, hence why the I’m too busy story was believable ;)

I always find it hard to describe myself, but I think my twitter profile does a good job so here it is - Cake and Cupcake maker with a love for weddings, special occasions, crafts, great colour schemes, photography and party planning

I hope to blog weekly about my cake jobs from the weekends and then share some recipes from time to time. I also hope to have some fun giveaways real soon to kick off the blog with a bang!!
Until next time, here are a few of my favourite cake creations, enjoy!
